Southern Downs Regional Council is inviting community feedback on a draft Tourism Strategy.

Why This Strategy Is Being Developed

This draft Tourism Strategy aims to enable Southern Downs Regional Council to support the sustainable development of tourism across the Southern Downs Local Government Area in the lead up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The strategy will be implemented by Council’s newly formed tourism and events team to support the region’s visitor economy and local tourism businesses.

What It Says

The draft Tourism Strategy outlines practical, achievable actions that Council, in partnership with other visitor economy partners, can deliver to support growth in the local visitor economy.

It outlines actions to provide economic, socio-cultural, and environmental benefits for the community across:

  • Leadership and governance: Clear roles to enable organisations to work together to develop tourism.
  • Place stewardship and sustainability: Protecting the natural, historical, and cultural assets that make the region unique, and that both visitors and residents value.
  • Social license: Ensuring tourism growth is welcomed by residents and provides them with real benefits.
  • Industry capability and workforce: Helping tourism businesses and event organisers to improve their visitor offerings and efficiencies through skill development.
  • Enabling infrastructure and access: Providing enabling infrastructure to support the development of new tourism offerings and enable visitors to easily explore the region.
  • Product, experience and event innovation: Creating more reasons for people to visit all year round.
  • Visitor information servicing: Making it simple for visitors to find the information they need to plan and book their visit and explore further.
  • Destination identity and marketing: Sharing quality stories and inspiration to attract the right kinds of visitors.

Some key actions in the strategy include

  • Enabling the development of new tourism offerings including via catalyst projects that will attract more visitors and enable tourism businesses to develop new offerings, such as Dark Sky Place certification for Girraween and Main Range National Parks, cycling routes, developing Killarney as a hub for outdoor recreation, enhancing business event venues, and attracting a 4–5-star hotel with conference facilities to Warwick.
  • Hosting an annual forum for the tourism and events industry to support learning and collaboration across the region.
  • Updating the destination’s brand identity in line with Queensland Country Tourism’s new destination brand.
  • Gaining ECO Destination certification from Ecotourism Australia to support destination development in line with global best practice for destination stewardship.
  • Lead with destination-first marketing tactics.
