Consultation closes 4:00 pm Thursday 19 November 2026
Project
Have your say on the future of the old Karara Railway Building.
We are committed to keeping our community safe and informed.
Southern Downs Regional Council is seeking feedback from the Karara community about the future of the former Karara Railway Building.
Why is Council consulting?
The former Karara railway building has reached a point where Council must decide its future.
An inspection found:
Significant termite damage
Structural deterioration
Safety concerns for public access
Ongoing maintenance and financial risks
As a result of this inspection, the site is currently fenced off to protect public safety.
What options are being considered?
Option 1 - Relocation
Need to stabilise the building before moving to a new location.
Council is open to hearing from organisations that may be interested in taking ownership of the building and using it as part of their operations.
Option 2 - Removal
Avoid future safety concerns and maintenance challenges.
Council will investigate ways to preserve and recognise the building's history by retaining important historical features, thoughtfully showcasing them for the community.
We want to hear from you.
Your feedback is important and it will help inform Council's decision-making process. Please attend one of Council’s pop-up information booths in your local area or complete the short survey below to provide your feedback by 4:00 pm 19 November 2026.
